Are you a rural and remote physician wanting to gain practical proficiency in performing and interpreting ultrasound scans? Have you attended an ultrasound course previously but found it lacking in relevance? Are you struggling to use your machine?

This three day course scheduled over a weekend for your convenience will give you the ultrasound skills you need to make critical decisions in a rural and remote setting.

Led at every step by skilled sonographers and physicians you will come away equipped with a set of new skills ready to apply in the real world.

This practical and focused course builds your skills in a practical, step-by-step manner with over 14 hours of scanning.

This course will provide you with the skills to:

demonstrate practical proficiency in B mode and colour image optimisation in order to enable appropriate diagnosis
demonstrate basic practical proficiency in performing and interpreting:
eFAST
AAA
gallbladder and biliary tree
transabdominal assessment in the 1st trimester
vascular access
outline the principles of assessment of first trimester bleeding including differentiation of pregnancies of unknown location and miscarriage
document and present complete and accurate sonographic findings for recording in the patient's record to facilitate appropriate diagnosis and clinical management

Ultrasound for Emergency Nurses

Ultrasound for Emergency Nurses (UENP) courses are delivered with a focus on the acquisition of practical skills for use by nurses in an emergency environment.

Designed in conjunction with doctors and nurses, this course is aimed at candidates at all levels that have little or no prior ultrasound experience. Hands on time is the focus with a 1:3/2:3 ratio of time dedicated to theory/practical.

The three day course has been developed and is overseen by Dr. Elissa Kennedy-Smith consultant emergency physician, and Tamara Smith, consultant registered nurse.
Course objectives

At the conclusion of this course you will be able to:

Describe physical principles and artifacts of ultrasound
Develop a protocol for image labelling, recording and storage
Demonstrate practical proficiency in image optimisation in order to enable appropriate diagnosis
Describe the sonographic characteristics of peripheral vessels in various physiological states
Demonstrate basic practical proficiency in vascular access through experience gained in the use of ultrasound phantoms
Perform basic musculoskeletal imaging assessment of calf, thigh and upper arm muscles
Perform soft tissue assessment of foreign bodies, cellulitis and abscesses
Sonographically assess fractures for guiding management in an emergency department context
