Introductory Ultrasound for Emergency Medicine

Introductory Ultrasound for Emergency Medicine (IUEM) courses are delivered with a focus on the acquisition of practical skills for use in an emergency environment.

Designed by doctors for doctors, these accredited courses are aimed at candidates at all levels that have little or no prior ultrasound experience. Hands on time is the focus with a 1:3/2:3 ratio of time dedicated to theory/practical.

The five day course is overseen by Dr. Adam Bystrzycki, and Dr. Jack Spencer consultant emergency physicians.
Course objectives

At the conclusion of this course you will be able to:

Explore the physical principles and artifacts of ultrasound to attain basic practical proficiency in image optimisation

Demonstrate basic practical proficiency in performing and interpreting the following ultrasound examinations:
eFAST
AAA
Lung
Vascular access (through experience gained on ultrasound phantoms)
Basic echo in life support

Discuss the clinical role, practical applications and limitations of focused ultrasound assessment of the following:
eFAST
AAA
Lung
Vascular access (through experience gained on ultrasound phantoms)
Basic echo in life support

Explain the practical application of the RUSH protocol and the HI-MAP imaging sequence in the assessment of the critically ill patient in shock

Document and present complete and accurate sonographic findings for recording in the patient’s record to facilitate appropriate diagnosis and clinical management

Advanced Emergency Medicine Ultrasound

and management of fractures in the emergency situation

Are you a rural and remote physician wanting to gain practical proficiency in performing and interpreting ultrasound scans? Have you attended an ultrasound course previously but found it lacking in relevance? Are you struggling to use your machine?

Advanced Wilderness Life Support

The course will be held at Cleburne Sate Park, Dallas/Ft.Worth Area, Texas

Cleburne State Park is located on 528 acres of land in an area of white limestone hills where oak, elm, mesquite, cedar and redbud are almost impenetrable. An earthen dam holds a 116 acre spring fed lake of sparkling clear water, creating excellent swimming and fishing opportunities for the whole family. The hills, valleys and lake offer a panorama of colors and natural scenic beauty throughout the year. The park offers excellent hiking and recreational activities on land and water. It is close to the Dallas-Ft. Worth metroplex, but it remains far removed from the stresses of city life making it a great destination for an Advanced Wilderness Life Support Course®.

The course is being presented by the John Peter Smith Hospital Family Medicine Residency Program.

An optional (fee required) certification in Basic Life Support in Obstetrics, BLSO® is being conducted on March 17th and supplemental workshops on Ultrasound and Wilderness Survival (no additional fee) are being offered March 18th.

Lectures will be conducted at the park group facilities with practical skills sessions held in the park where you will "learn the skills to prevent medical problems, reduce suffering and save lives in non-traditional medical settings."

ACME a three day course using simulation, small group discussions, mini-scenarios and interactive workshops to explore the complex specialty of emergency medicine. The ACME course aims to stimulate and provoke the experienced physician practicing emergency medicine and who wishes to be challenged. Because the emphasis in this course is on learning and sharing information, there is no formal assessment of participants.

Advanced Life Support (Level 1)


27th March

The one day course will be held in Adelaide, Australia.

The one-day ALS 1 course covers advanced life support training specifically designed for healthcare personnel who require more advanced skills than those taught in a basic life support course. This course will provide participants with the skills for managing a cardiac arrest or other medical emergencies in a clinical setting until the arrival of a resuscitation team or paramedics.
